Inside your free assessment

More than a quickhearing screen

An online screening can only suggest that further testing may be worthwhile. A Hear Better home assessment examines your ears, measures your hearing and gives you a proper explanation of the findings in the same visit.

See the complete hearing-test process

A proper hearing history

We discuss the situations where hearing feels difficult, relevant health information and what you would like to improve.

Examination of both ears

Your ear canals and eardrums are checked before testing so visible wax or another concern is not overlooked.

Air-conduction testing

You respond to a range of tones through headphones so we can measure the quietest sounds heard at different pitches.

Bone-conduction testing

Where clinically appropriate, this helps distinguish how sound is travelling through the outer, middle and inner ear.

A clear explanation

We talk through the audiogram in plain English and relate the findings to conversations, television and everyday listening.

Your next steps

You receive honest guidance on monitoring, medical referral or hearing aids. If no action is needed, we will tell you.

Free means free. Your assessment and explanation are not conditional on buying hearing aids, and there is no same-visit purchase requirement.

Why hearing care at home

Care designed aroundeveryday life

A home visit is not simply a clinic appointment moved to another address. It lets hearing care happen in familiar surroundings, with the people and listening situations that matter to you close at hand.

No travel or waiting room

There is no clinic journey, parking problem or unfamiliar setting to manage. This can make assessment easier for older adults and people with limited mobility.

Family can be involved

With the patient's agreement, a relative or carer can join the appointment, describe everyday difficulties and hear the findings first-hand.

Care in your listening environment

Hearing concerns and hearing-aid adjustments can be discussed in the rooms where conversations, television and telephone calls actually happen.

Follow-up stays convenient

If hearing aids are chosen, fitting, annual reassessment and service support can continue at home rather than ending after the sale.

Hear Better is not tied to one hearing-aid manufacturer. If your results show that hearing aids could help, suitable options are compared against your hearing, daily listening needs, comfort, dexterity, phone compatibility and budget.

Real patient experiences

Trusted by familiesacross the North East

Patients and their families share what it was like to arrange a home hearing test, understand the results, choose hearing aids and receive ongoing support from Hear Better.

I have worn hearing aids, both NHS and private, for over 50 years, so I know what I want. I wanted the opinion of an independent audiologist. The ones Liam supplied are the best I've had.

Frequently asked

Clear answersbefore you book

If you would rather ask something directly, call Hear Better Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Is the home hearing test really free?
Yes. Hear Better provides a full adult hearing assessment at home free of charge. There is no obligation to buy hearing aids after the test.
What happens during a home hearing test?
We discuss the hearing changes you have noticed, examine your ears, test your hearing with professional equipment and explain your results. If further care could help, the available options are discussed clearly.
Can a family member arrange the appointment?
Yes. A relative can request the appointment and, with the patient's agreement, be present during the visit. This can make it easier to discuss day-to-day listening difficulties and next steps together.
Do you only recommend one hearing-aid brand?
No. Hear Better is independent and can compare suitable hearing aids from leading manufacturers. The recommendation is based on the hearing results, listening needs, comfort, dexterity, phone compatibility and budget.
What hearing-aid aftercare is included?
Aftercare includes a free hearing test every 12 months to recheck the prescription, unlimited service call-outs to help keep the aids working, and advice by phone or email for the lifetime of the aids, including after the warranty ends.
Which parts of the North East do you cover?
Home appointments are available across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside, County Durham, Darlington, Teesside, Northumberland and surrounding communities. We confirm availability from the postcode when you request a visit.
How long should I allow for the appointment?
Appointment length depends on the service and what is found. We allow enough time to discuss your concerns, carry out the appropriate checks and explain the results without rushing. The team will confirm what to expect when arranging your visit.
What if the test shows I do not need hearing aids?
You will be told clearly. The next step may be monitoring your hearing, seeking medical advice or taking no immediate action. A free test does not create any obligation to buy hearing aids.
